Für die BMW Länderteams geht der Titelkampf in der FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) am kommenden Wochenende in die nächste Runde, wenn in Brands Hatch (GB) die Saisonrennen 15 und 16 stattfinden. Ein Blick in die Vergangenheit zeigt, dass die 3,703 Kilometer lange Grand-Prix-Strecke dem BMW 320si WTCC liegt: 2007 feierte Lokalmatador Andy Priaulx (GB) vom BMW Team UK dort einen Sieg, im vergangenen Jahr stand Jörg Müller (DE) für das BMW Team Germany ganz oben auf dem Treppchen.
Seit 1926 werden in Brands Hatch Rennen ausgetragen. Damals traten Motorrad-Piloten auf einer Graspiste noch entgegen des Uhrzeigersinns gegeneinander an. In den 50er Jahren wurde die Strecke asphaltiert und die Fahrtrichtung geändert.
Der Grand-Prix-Kurs, den die WTCC für ihre beiden Läufe nutzt, entstand 1959. Er ist überaus rhythmisch zu fahren – und bietet einige der bekanntesten Kurven im internationalen Motorsport. An dieser perfekt in die Landschaft eingebetteten Traditionsstrecke ist nichts symmetrisch. Schon die erste „Paddock Hill“ Kurve hat es in sich und führt die Piloten nach einem „blinden“ Einlenken in eine Senke hinab. Im rückwärtigen Teil stellen vier schnelle Rechtskurven das Können der Fahrer auf die Probe. Das Fahrzeug muss äußerst präzise auf die Lenkbewegungen der Piloten reagieren.
Zwischen 1964 und 1986 trug die Formel 1 den Großen Preis von Großbritannien zwölf Mal auf der anspruchsvollen Naturrennstrecke aus. Zwei Mal firmierte die Veranstaltung unter dem Namen Großer Preis von Europa. Mit drei Siegen ist Niki Lauda (AT) der erfolgreichste Formel-1-Pilot in Brands Hatch, gefolgt von Nigel Mansell (GB), der dort zwei Mal gewann.
Brands Hatch gehört zur kleinen Gemeinde Fawkham, die nahe Dartford in der englischen Grafschaft Kent liegt. Dartford ist Verwaltungssitz des gleichnamigen Distrikts. Dort leben knapp 60 000 Einwohner.
Zwei der Bewohner Dartfords haben es zu weltweiter Bekanntheit gebracht: Rolling-Stones-Frontmann Mick Jagger (GB) und Gitarrist Keith Richards (GB) sind dort geboren und haben später ihre musikalische Karriere hier begonnen.

The 3.703-kilometre Grand Prix Circuit will host rounds 15 and 16 of the series. A look to the past proves the track suits the BMW 320si WTCC: In 2007 local hero Andy Priaulx (GB) claimed victory for BMW Team UK there, last year BMW Team Germany’s Jörg Müller (DE) made it to the top step of the podium.
Brands Hatch has hosted motor racing since 1926, with the first events catering for motorcycles on an anti-clockwise circuit. In the 1950s the circuit was laid with tarmac, and the direction of travel reversed.
The Grand Prix circuit, as used for both WTCC rounds, was inaugurated in 1959. It is a flowing track and includes some of the best-known corners in international motor racing. Nothing is symmetrical at this circuit, which is rich in tradition and nestled perfectly in the surrounding countryside. The very first corner, “Paddock Hill” is a challenge in itself, with drivers heading blind into a corner before descending into a dip. In the return sector of the track, four fast right-handers really put the drivers to the test. The car must react extremely precisely to the driver’s steering.
Between 1964 and 1986 this challenging circuit, which follows the natural contours of the area, hosted 12 British Grands Prix. Two further Formula One two races were run as European Grands Prix. Niki Lauda (AT) scored three Grand Prix victories, making him Brands Hatch’s most successful Formula One driver, followed by Nigel Mansell (GB) with two victories.
Brands Hatch is in Fawkham, near Dartford in the English county of Kent. Dartford is the administrative centre for this area, which is home to approximately 60,000 inhabitants.
Two of Dartford’s sons have achieved worldwide fame: Rolling Stones’ frontman Mick Jagger (GB) and guitarist Keith Richards (GB) were born in the town, and later started their musical careers there.
